• Once upon a time...

Seven months ago and a few thousand miles apart,
there lived five sistahs known to be gorgeous, athletic, and all of them smart.
    The wisest was Claudine Bonner,
    the toughest, Hanner Phaner.

The bravest was Cristine Kao (pronounced Kay-O),
and tamest, Cam Ngo (pronounced Ng-gO).
The most clever of them all, was Hedia Balkhi,
who always carried with her, a toolbox and universal key.

Now, though the girls were beautiful and strong, they hardly looked the same –
the only thing they shared was their passion for challenges that were mostly insane.
If you saw them together, you may question if they could biologically relate,
but that doesn’t matter, because the sistahs were brought together by fate.

Claudine, whose nickname was Sugar, went back to school to get her Phd.
She played scrabble every night and studied education to better humanity.
Going back to school was like living in a bubble,
but it was her crazy quest for fitness that got the sistahs into this trouble…

  • One snowy night in London, after her 39th birthday,
Sugar drew up a list of “40 to-dos before 40” without delay:
“Run at least one marathon”, was fourth on the list …
she knew this was a challenge that the sistahs wouldn’t resist.

Like most sane people out there, the sistahs hated to run,
though they’d completed half-marathons with little training, just for fun.
Most of the time, they would painfully kick and scream along the way
but each loved the challenge and competition at the end of the day.

One by one they signed up for the Disney World 26-mile race,
through peer pressure and the thought of a Mickey medal to add to each trophy case!
But to make this run more special, Sugar, Cristine, and Hanna joined a group
to raise funds for Athletes for Special Kids, the “Team A.S.K.” running troop.

    |
  • And so the sistahs were partnered with four* special kids in need
of nursing care and therapy, all terribly expensive indeed.
Through Special Kids, funds raised will go towards providing care
and programs for these children from nurses and therapists extraordinaire.

As participants fortunate and healthy enough to run and train
they seek all the support and donation for their special campaign.
No mountain, no rain, or snowstorm could slow them on this mission,
to raise $6000 for these kids and finish their running expedition…

Well my family and friends, it’s not very often you can see the smiling faces
of those who will benefit and how you’ve helped with their special cases.
So a small way to help make this world a better place,

Hi my name is Miya. I am 11 month old with a huge personality. I am very happy, I love music, love to talk and make sweet sounds. I have Alagille Syndrome which affects my liver. Hi, my name is Stevie. I am 21 years old. I come to Special Kids for the skilled nursing service. I have post meningitis. It has caused me to have amputation of my fingers and below my knees, it has also caused my visual impairment. I can’t speak but I say a lot with my eyes and the nurses say that I have a sweet smile. I have been coming to Special Kids for 7 years. I love country music and to be bounced in my bed.

* We are sorry to tell you that Stevie passed away in the middle of October 2008. I will continue to run and fundraise in Stevie's memory and honour.

Just some background on Stevie, he was one of the first children to come to Special Kids and was loved by all the staff.

About the artist

Called “one of the wild boys of Polish art” by Harold Schonberg of the New York Times, Zbigniew Kupczynski was born in Poland and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw and later in Paris, where he had a contract with the Gallery Andre Schoeller. He exhibited in Europe and the United States throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s including shows at the Musee de la Ville, Paris, France; the Museum of Modern Art, Miami, Florida; the Philadelphia Museum of Art (together with Picasso, Miro, Chagall, and Klee); and Documenta, Kassel, West Germany.

"Kupczynski is a dynamic and powerful painter and his emotion is expressed basically through his intensity of colours. One might say that colour is Kupczynski's music."
